Summary

She left the NYPD in the firestorm of a high-profile case gone horribly wrong。 Three years later, the ghosts of her past roar back to terrifying life。

When NYPD undercover cop Laney Bird's cover is blown in a racketeering case against the Russian mob, she flees the city with her troubled son, Alfie。 Now, three years later, she's found the perfect haven in Sylvan, a charming town in upstate New York。 But then the unthinkable happens: her boy vanishes。

Local law enforcement dismisses the thirteen-year-old as a runaway, but Laney knows better。 Alfie would never abandon his special routines and the sanctuary of their home。 Could he have been kidnapped—or worse? As a February snowstorm rips through the region, Laney is forced to launch her own investigation, using every trick she learned in her years undercover。

As she digs deeper into the disappearance, Laney learns that Alfie and a friend had been meeting with an older man who himself vanished, but not before leaving a corpse in his garage。 With dawning horror, Laney discovers that the man was a confidential informant from a high-profile case she had handled in the past。 Although he had never known her real identity, he knows it now。 Which means several other enemies do, too。 Time is running out, and as Laney's search for her son grows more desperate, everything depends on how good a detective she really is—badge or no。

Single mother Laney Bird, the heroine of Naymark’s promising debut and series launch, gave up her career as an NYPD undercover narcotics detective and moved to Sylvan, N。Y。, an idyllic town upstate where she believed her troubled son, Alfie, would be safe。 Three years after the two settle in Sylvan, 13-year-old Alfie disappears on his way to school band practice one night, and Laney is forced to realize the Hudson Valley is no safer than the inner city。 The school administration assumes this is just one more of the behaviors that already have Alfie on the verge of expulsion。 By-the-books cop Ed Boswell is more sympathetic, but he, too, has had to deal with Alfie’s acting out in the past。 When Laney discovers that Alfie’s disappearance is tied to her own past, she must confront a vengeful ex-con as well as what it truly means to be a parent。 With each twist and turn, Naymark ratchets up the tension。 This is an original, satisfying roller-coaster ride for domestic suspense fans。 Agent: Paula Munier, Talcott Notch Literary Services。 (Feb。)

Laney Bird had it all, her dream job as an undercover NYC cop, a handsome husband, and a son。 Her job begins to wear on her family so she makes plans to transfer to a less dangerous job, but her son has yet another breakdown at school and she comes home to find her husband at the door with his bags packed as he walk out on his wife and son。 Laney decides it’s time to quit the force and focus on her son, so she resigns, packs up the house, sells it and pays off her ex’s outstanding debts and moves upstate。 While living in a smaller town, Laney has left her old life behind, until her son disappears and she learns that the Russian Mob she was working to take down in he city knows her real identity and location。 Now it’s a race to find her son before he pays for his Mother’s past。

A page turner that will have you on the edge of your seat at times and cheering on Laney and Alfie。 It started out a little slow but picked up as I read on and then I had to find out how it ended。 A good read。

Thank you again to crooked lane books for this opportunity to read and review this advanced readers copy。 This book did disappoint。 This story follows Laney, a mother to Allie, who has some troubles with expressing himself and tends to tantrum。 Her husband Theo, left her and Alfie when taking care of Alfie and his needs proved to be too much for him and his art career。 He takes off and never looks back, which takes a huge toll on the family。 Laney quits her job as an undercover cop for the Russian drug mob to focus on her son and take care of him。 She leaves her job in the middle of a crazy case。 Then one day Alfie goes missing。 As a prior detective, she starts to investigate her sons disappearance and won’t accept that he has run away as the local law enforcement keeps expressing。 As she digs, secretes from the last case are revealed and it seems that someone involved in that case may have taken Alfie as revenge。 Laney will stop at nothing to uncover the truth and protect and save her son, no matter who gets hurt in the crossfire!I really liked Lane。 She was a strong female character who didn’t take crap and didn’t back down。 She went against authority in the name of finding her beloved son。 Alfie was also a great character。 Yes he has his issues, but his issues may help him in the long run!#justonemorechapter #couchreading #februarybooks #advancedreadercopy #tuesdayreading #bookreview #bookblog #derectivebooks #bookchallenge2021 。。。more

This one was just okay for me。 I found it very slow moving。 It took me a really long time to get into it and it just simmered。 It sounded really good when I requested it and had high hopes。 It just wasn’t fast-paced enough for me, that’s not to say, that others won’t really enjoy it。 Just not the style of writing I enjoy。Thank you #netgalley and #crookedlanebooks for the eARC。

Enjoyed reading this book。 I was kept from start to finish。 The story plot is pretty realistic as well as the characters。 The situation if what many have faced and to realize just what it feels like or try to was very easy to do with this read。

The book started a little slow for me but once I got in to it, it was an easy read。 I was drawn in to the story of Alfie and what would happen to him after he went missing。

I feel grateful to have the chance to read Naymark’s debut novel。 The detail in this book has me hooked from page 1。 “The bus smelled like bologna sandwiches, fruity body sprays, and old soda and sounded like a monkey house。 But she was used to it。 And she needed the extra money。” Laney’s son, Alfie, has gone missing。 As a former undercover cop, the worst thoughts race through Laney’s mind and, infuriatingly, nobody seems to be taking her as serious as they should。“She pictured Alfie, her stomac I feel grateful to have the chance to read Naymark’s debut novel。 The detail in this book has me hooked from page 1。 “The bus smelled like bologna sandwiches, fruity body sprays, and old soda and sounded like a monkey house。 But she was used to it。 And she needed the extra money。” Laney’s son, Alfie, has gone missing。 As a former undercover cop, the worst thoughts race through Laney’s mind and, infuriatingly, nobody seems to be taking her as serious as they should。“She pictured Alfie, her stomach clenching with fear。 Where was he? Things had improved lately。 A lot。 He’d been sweet, even-tempered, talkative with her, had even been mentioning a friend。” As a school psychologist, Alfie reminds me of many kids I’ve worked with and the fact that the author makes mention of a school psychologist makes me feel so seen! There were a few other far-fetched details in this story and none of the characters were particularly likeable。 Some of the decisions Laney made and how she treated other children involved with Alfie’s case did not set well with me either。 But I think that just added to the building intensity for Laney and her missing son。 There were twists and turns that I didn’t see coming with an intense ending。 Overall, I liked this one。CW: missing child, child abuse, mention of substances and use, inappropriate sexual advancement, graphic injury descriptions, mention of gunfire 。。。more

She finds out that Alfie had met with an older man。Story backtracks to Laney’s past adventures as an undercover detective; which was certainly interesting a bit wild and terrifying (I read Emilya Naymark’s biography。 She is married to an NYPD undercover detective so some of the adventures with Laney’s character were inspired by real life events。)。Although interesting, I cannot say that I liked Laney Hmmm she knew he had issues and left him alone for HOURS!! However, I did like Alfie and was anxious to read what was happening to him。He too had an interesting experience with Hopper。 Alfie states that he also like appreciated his metaphors and his advice。 Alfie was always bullied and Hooper told him that one way to stop it is to stare them down… don’t blink and you will look crazy。。。 think like Charles Manson。 You will have them fearful that one day you may do something crazy to them。Alfie’s relationship with Hooper is more like father son。 In fact, he had a much better relationship with Hooper than his own father Note: I am a Jack Reacher fan。 Currently reading The Sentinel ~ Reacher has similar advice as Hooper…He states make the bad guys THINK you are going to hurt them and they will leave you alone! Less thriller and more of a mother wanting to find her child。 That is fine, but I just wish it was not marketed as this shock story。 By no means is this book bad at all。 It just was not a thriller in the way I thought。 I did like it, but I was mad when I thought there was going to be more to the story and it was just ended so nicely。 Perhaps a revamping of how this book is viewed would be useful so people are not disappointed the way I was。

Really enjoyed this book but Emilya Naymark。 I liked the main character, Laney and truly empathized with her throughout the book。 Yes, she did things unconventionally, and maybe sometimes illegally, at times in the book, but as a mother I understand her needing to do anything to find her soon。 I also liked the unlikely friendship between her and Holly (but it is possible)。 I thought it was a nicely paced thriller that was not over-the-top a going for shock value。 I also liked the chapters from h Really enjoyed this book but Emilya Naymark。 I liked the main character, Laney and truly empathized with her throughout the book。 Yes, she did things unconventionally, and maybe sometimes illegally, at times in the book, but as a mother I understand her needing to do anything to find her soon。 I also liked the unlikely friendship between her and Holly (but it is possible)。 I thought it was a nicely paced thriller that was not over-the-top a going for shock value。 I also liked the chapters from her son Alfie’s point of view because she did well giving me a glance in to a young teens mind (who had some emotional troubles)。 Overall, a solid and enjoyable thriller。 。。。more

The book focuses on a single mother who used to be an undercover police officer。 When her son Alfie goes missing, she does everything in her power to get him back no matter the consequences。 I think that Laney is a character that I loved and hated at times。 I didn’t enjoy some of the tactics she used while looking for her son, for example lying about still being a police officer and the way she treated people。 But at the same time I think that any parent would act the same way if they were in th The book focuses on a single mother who used to be an undercover police officer。 When her son Alfie goes missing, she does everything in her power to get him back no matter the consequences。 I think that Laney is a character that I loved and hated at times。 I didn’t enjoy some of the tactics she used while looking for her son, for example lying about still being a police officer and the way she treated people。 But at the same time I think that any parent would act the same way if they were in the same situation。My favourite character is Agnes because she always has Laney’s back, is smart and funny。 I like the interesting dynamic of Laney and Agnes’s friendship especially since they wouldn’t have been friends when they were younger。 This is because at a young age, Laney thought that females like Agnes (girly girls who loved pink, makeup and manicures) were ‘silly’ and ‘even pointless’。I would have liked more drama surrounding Alfie’s disappearance and those involved because I found that part a little boring。 But I found the rest of the book to be an interesting read which kept me entertained with the twists and turns。 I received an advanced copy for free, and this is my honest opinion 。。。more
